Life After Marion

It has been over a month since I have had to start clearing out the creative space of my loving mentor and closest friend anyone could ask for a mother, picking through hundreds of books and art supplies, trying to be as conservative with what to keep and still ending up with dozens of boxes. I kept telling myself "Once this is all done and dealt with I will get back to real life." but the task is so overwhelmingly tedious that these thoughts of all the wonderful regards I've received from the countless hearts that Marion has touched demanded this post, for there are simply too many to reply to each and every one.

Marion was never done with her passion, in fact she had so much more than she could keep track of. Signed works and unfinished paintings that just need a touch of paint keep springing up from the most unlikely of places after I thought I had it all organized. It brings a wash of surprise and nostalgic feelings recognizing the time of her life the painting came from of which I witnessed growing up, and also that groan of ironic exhaustion as if my quest of unearthing treasures here will never be complete before I have to move.

Unfortunately I did not receive full responsibility of her finished paintings to take care of as I was deceived to believe in the terrible politics in the death of a family member even before her time. It is why I am moving so soon, but know that this move brings quicker the legacy Marion has left plenty of in the form of an interview DVD, the finishing of her work in progresses to the best of my ability, posting new discoveries of her art on this blog along with answering any questions about Marion to anybody who missed their chance to my best knowledge, and hopefully, in the next year or so, a book. I owe her so much for all she has done that I must extend these gestures of what Marion would have done to all of you. For the next two months, though, silence will still reign as I get my life back on track.

Winter is on it's way for sure. There is a nip in the air and snow on the mountain passes already.

I am still finishing up some gems that were just about done just before all of this craziness started. Turning out to be lots of fun seeing so many paintings come together so quickly.I'm almost caught up to them though and am really looking forward to starting some new ideas that have been brewing in my head. Hello once again! I have settled very nicely into my new hospice. I am getting excellent care found a loving team of caregivers, and enjoying wonderful visits every day from family and friends,

Here we are,early Sept. We are just now getting some of the typical hot sunshine you'd expect in early June. It pours in my huge window first thing in the morning and I get the golden glow in the evenings as it sets. My gang here is keeping my room full of fresh flowers, and the inspiration is fantastic. My joined-at-the-hip buddy Bente Hansen is here every day and is is magical to just be together to share thoughts and paint and play.

I have a stomach pump hooked up now but have the freedom to unhook myself and get up normal to go for a walk either out in the garden off the ward here, or we go down to the huge lobby and people-watch. Starbucks Chai lattee makes that a whole lot of fun too

So off I go. Have a great daytoo!

Staying In Touch

This particular post today is huge for me. My blog will be my newsletter now, where I can share my daily adventures, and we can interract in the comments with each other. It is meant for everyone - family, friends, clients, and anyone simply curious about me or my work.

To catch you all up, I have been living with colon cancer for 4 years now. Do I believe in miracles? ... you bet I do!. I am living one now. The latest incident which has had me in the hospital for 6 weeks is a turning point. I've chosen to be in the care of a wonderful hospice team that keeps me pain-free, in high spirits and feling very safe and secure when my body doesn't cooperate 100%.

I will spend each day making the best of opportunities that I do have. Right now I am able to leave on day passes to spend some time at home. The hospice has also let me set up my art supplies and paint in my room! Internet connections are bad at best though there, so I will have to blog whenever it works.

I have family and friends at my side daily, supporting me and silently tolerating my endless demands. It is hard on everyone to be so helpless. I accept every day, one at a time, as a blessing. Another chance to love, laugh and play with some color.

Every thoughtful comment I recieve on one of my various web pages gets read, and too often silently acknowledged. It is important to me that you all know that every single prayer has touched me.

Every thank you from me is also full of sincere love.

And for now, please accept this huge THANK YOU for taking this journey with me.

Travelling Vancouver Island

Great trip over on the ferry and our first campground "Living Forest" was a beauty. Tiers of sites all looking out over the harbour with lots of ship activity and very scenic flats everchanging as the tide goes in and out.
Crossed over to the west side of the island to Tofino three days later. My daughter and her friend were off surfing in no time. I went bear watching on a boat with much success, and later chatted up the locals in the galleries and cafes. Found some excellent chowder for lunch with home made cornbread ... yum.
We found a great spot to watch some pro surfers on the bigger waves - just remember though this is BC, not Hawaii, but thrilling none the less.
We did a mile hike through untouched rainforest (except for the excellent boardwalks) and I was blessed with a huge bald eagle flying through the trees only 40 feet from me. An unbelievable 5 seconds I will never forget. I was about 60 feet above the river bed, so we were right at eye level.
Lots of hikes up and down the beaches, lots of photos, and great fun watching the dogs dash in and out of the waves and the kids building sand castles. It's been raining so there was every color of raincoat you can imagine.
Amanda sprained her foot so the kids left early and I had the whole RV covered with painting gear before they were out of sight! So now I'm settling down for a few days to play with my acrylics. I was able to do lots of exploring and sketching with them here but pretty hard to set up paints with 2 other people coming and going in the RV, and our time seemed full with activities.
So ... off to paint. See you in a few days.

   This latest commission was a joy to do, and it is off to it's new home appropriately in Texas.

May is a fresh new month for me this year. My younger brother and I have been challenged together with cancer for 3 years now, and he lost his battle 3 weeks ago. I then had my 4th major surgery 2 weeks ago, and until this morning it has been a real struggle for me to find myself again. My friends and family came through with cards, food and flowers to fill my house, which reminds me what we live for. I woke up today feeling like my old self in every way ... and it sure feels good to be back!
   My studio is also very happy to see me back. I can't wait to create! Hubby got out the RV for me, is checking her over very carefully, and Amanda and I will be off to Vancouver Island for our first trip this week. The sun is shining, the blossoms are out in full glory and the cottonwoods are the most delicious shades of spring green.

Here's a toast to life and love! Let's see now where it leads us.

I'm decorating Western this year. I recently purchased a new Longhorn hide, and it is really giving me much inspiration and pleasure ... so I figured I'd share it. I have it sprawled in the middle of my living room floor for all to enjoy. The bows on the tree match the light brown of the brindle, my bronze horse graces the mantle, and the Navajo blankets cover the dark leather sofas ... much to the delight of our Mopar cat Duster who enjoys surveying the action out the window from his perch.

We discussed and solved many world problems of course, but on a lighter scale also did some wonderful brainstorming on our daily challenges. The art of blogging came up, and they have successfully encouraged me to share my thoughts more often than I do. They made me realize that they really are curious ... no big deal, just friendly staying in touch.

They always give me glowing praise for my successes, which I of course humbly enjoy like a puppy does a good scratch ..... but what doesn't get said is that there are many efforts made to achieve the odd glory. It is so important to accept these challenges with faith and love, let them teach us to grow, try new ideas, stay true to ourselves and most of all enjoy the journey. I sure have.

Today's image is an example of simple practice and play done by the fireplace as a storm raged outside and we had no power. The perfect example of how inconvenience turns to sheer comfort when you have to adapt outside of the box.

The drive up into the hills is always so good for my soul. I passed over 20 Bald Eagles perched high in the trees as sentinels over the river below. As I left home the Trumpeter Swans flew low overhead to their daily feed in the harvested corn fields. The crows are playing in the blueberry bushes by the hundreds. A very healthy coyote sauntered confidently up the fence line this morning on his daily rounds. This is what make my days special.

Life is as good as homemade cheesecake with cherrries on top.

I was actually surprised that there wasn't more color in the trees throughout September in Alaska, but it turns out that I didn't miss fall color here at home either, as we are just now coming into it's full glory in the Fraser Valley. I have returned from a month long dream luxury working vacation as Artisit In Residence on Holland America's Ms Zaandam! Unbelievable. We made 4 round trips to Alaska, the first 3 in perfect warm sunshine, and the 3rd in more typical northern weather but just as magnificent.

I painted in the Lido every day surrounded by windows so that I didn't miss a thing, and with the largest skylight I've ever had which opened up to the beautiful fresh Alaska air every day. I have met so many wonderful new friends that I can't even count, and the response to me and my work was simply overwhelming. My head is so big now it will be "bobbling" for months.

I am going to create a newsletter, and blog daily a bit at a time about the trip, as it would take me pages to say it all. Stay tuned, and enjoy my adventure with me.

Alaska here I come!!! I am off tomorrow to head down to Seattle for Friday to start my Alaskan adventure on the Ms Zaandam for 4 weeks. AUGUST 2010 NEWSLETTER

I have to begin this newsletter by sincerely thanking everyone once again for your support and encouragement concerning my health. I was literally on my way into surgery last Wed when the CT scan showed that all three tumors in my lung had shrunk ... so they did not operate! I am thrilled. I will get my chemo over with in 2 weeks and then it's just back to regular monitoring. I just simply have too many paintings yet to do..... and so many friends.

I am painting up a storm these days with a real variety of fun experiments, major works and some new subjects. Most are still in progress and will be on my blog as soon as they are completed. My love and experience many years ago working with race horses has me revisiting the spirit of the track life. Florals are proving to be the best subject for many of my experiments, especially abstracts, and landscapes as well. Also I have 13 new raven paintings all laid out with some wonderful new approaches being tried to better express their unique character.

The Zaandam is still sailing every week to Alaska and I have recieved a very positive response to my work. I will have to wait until the Hawaii cruises start before I do my Artist In Residence stint, but my bathing suit and suntan lotion are ready to go for when I am! Also great news, I will also be on the Veendam which is now sailing between NY and Bermuda, and later in the year to South America.

I have signed over all rights and income from reproduction of my work to my daughter Amanda Rose. She has used her photography and editing skills to create files suitable for the print on demand program that Fine Art America offers. What a great winter we've had here on the West Coast, and already summer is here. I'm dusting off the RV and raring to go again!

It's great to be very successfully competing once again in shows. I do like to know that my work is worthy of showing with my peers.

I do have to take a break for a few weeks to have some cancer surgery again right away. The great part is that I will be pretty much spending all of my time in the studio recovering and getting lots of painting done. Thanks to everyone for sending all that great healing energy my way.

My newest adventure is going to be working with a great team of agents and showing my work on the Holland America cruise ship ms Zaandam. I will be on board as Artist In Residence on a couple of the sailings to Alaska later this summer as well as to Hawaii in the winter.

I'll be able to catch up on my emails once in awhile, so please forgive me in advance if I don't reply to inquiries right away. Such is the joy of a one-woman show!
